The Undergraduate Nursing Diversity Association hosted a stethoscope skills day, in which there were samplings of more than 30 different heart and lung sounds to help students learn heart and lung sound identification, Feb. 15.

Drexel graduate Jody Brelsford '72, who works as a representative for 3M Littmann, led the presentation about new technologies for stethoscopes. One of the stethoscopes presented can distinguish between the many different sounds of the heart and lungs. According to Brelsford, the new technology in digital stethoscopes can amplify sound, making louder what one wants to hear.

3M Littmann is a Dow 30, which has 25 billion in sales to innovate, and there are 57,000 3M products.

"This event promoted diversity in healthcare by encouraging all students interested in a health profession to attend. It also encouraged nursing students to take a more hands on approach to their auscultation skills with a stethoscope by allowing us to listen to a large library of sounds through stethoscopes of all price ranges," Alexandra Scheinfeld, UNDO member and nursing major, said.

"This presentation helped health students to identify sounds through classic style stethoscopes and also gave us exposure to the electronic stethoscopes and identifying software that is rapidly becoming the future of auscultation." Scheinfeld added.

Drexel is in the running for receiving a new Littmann 3200 electronic scope and software for students to use. Only a handful of other schools have this technology. If Drexel were able to receive one of these stethoscopes, it would be the only school in Philadelphia to have one.

"By giving presentations such as these, students are educated on where the times are going. Though it is still an art form, now, you have more tools to use in verifying where you think you need to go," Brelsford said.

"Bluetooth technology tells you were to put the scope. It makes it easier. People have gotten away from a good exam. It forces the emphasis of looking at the body as a whole." Brelsford added.

The Littmann 3200 has received the title of medical innovation of the year.

The UNDO's goal is to "promote cultural awareness, sensitivity, and support of all students in the undergraduate nursing program."
