On Jan. 18, Drexel University Online announced the launch of a new program: Bachelor in Science in Business Administration Jan. 18.
The new BSBA program includes a wide range of courses that introduce students to all aspects of business with an emphasis on how things are done in the real world. The program is designed to imitate the BSBA program taught at Drexel's main campus; all the courses that are offered at Drexel Online are also taught at Drexel's main campus.
Drexel Online offers the same classes, because when "students graduate [they graduate] with a Drexel University degree, not a Drexel Online degree," Kenneth Hartman, academic director for Drexel Online, said.
Though the similarities are vast, Drexel University and Drexel Online's programs are different in which the way they are taught. Kristen Betts, who has taught in traditional, hybrid and online settings, finds that while the online teaching setting may be similar, it is not the same as face-to-face teaching.
"With both traditional and blended courses, faculty have the advantage of working with students in a face-to-face environment, so community development is somewhat [of] an inherent part of the classroom," Betts said. "In online education, faculty need to strategically consider how course development and instruction can support student engagement and community development. This also pertains to discussion boards...faculty don't have the luxury of simply jumping in, like in a face-to-face classroom, and quickly asking another question."
"Currently, over 3.5 million college students are taking online course[s] and/or earning online college degrees. At the secondary school level, over 700,000 high school students are taking one or more courses online, and nearly 40 states have established state-wide or state-lead virtual schools," Hartman said. "We're very proud to offer our students the outstanding Drexel curriculum within this convenient online format."
Last year, Drexel University Online offered over 80 degrees and certificates that were completely online. This upcoming academic year, Drexel Online will add one more degree to the list of offered courses with the BSBA program.
