The past three Colonial Athletic Association Blood Drive Challenge Championships have been won by Drexel. And Drexel students gathered Oct. 29 to give blood and make that final push in an attempt to win their fourth straight.
Donation locations were located at Behrakis Grand Hall, Van Rensselaer Residence Hall, the Earl Mack School of Law, the Alpha Pi Lambda fraternity, the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and Stiles Hall, located at the center city campus.
A fourth straight championship, would tie Delaware all-time for tops in the CAA.
Rebecca Weidensaul, associate director of athletics, believes that Drexel can win its fourth consecutive title.
"When you talk about winning, it's all about earning. The momentum was fantastic. There are obstacles that we have to overcome such as flu and so fourth," Weidensaul said. "I really believe in Drexel University and I think whatever we produce today in terms of total numbers is going to be sensational. I want to thank Tobey Oxholm and all of the students out on the west coast for being part of this today and really showing their dragon unity."
Assistant Dean for Student Conduct and Community Standards Stephen Rupprecht, was a double donor yesterday. Rupprecht was extremely proud of the Drexel student body participation.
"I'm very encouraged by the turn out. I think it says a lot about Drexel's student body that so many people would contribute to such a great cause," Rupprecht said. "I think some people come because they want to win the blood drive. I think most come because they want to help others."
Weidensaul believes that winning the CAA championship comes second to simply helping people in need.
"I think we all have to realize that our lives can change at a moments notice and we end up relying on people that we don't expect to," Weidensaul said. "The Red Cross has had a long time tradition of being there in this kind of situation. Drexel University is a place where there's such an abundance of time, talent and resources, that its such a perfect fit to meet the needs of others."
