Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) visited Drexel University Oct. 9 to speak to a small crowd of students on topics ranging from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the debate over healthcare. Specter, who was a guest of the Drexel Democrats, gave a short speech that was followed by what he called "a student town hall debate" during which Drexel students were able to ask the senator questions.
The debate at one point turned to the amount of debt that college graduates are accumulating and the lack of jobs that college students will face when they enter the marketplace. The senator laid out his plan for student debt forgiveness for students that engage in community service during or after college and also said that he sees the economy as being in good shape in the spring when the next group of seniors graduate.
Although he shied away from taking a stance on whether he would support a preemptive Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear weapons, Specter did reiterate the questions he would like to see answered before sending more troops to Afghanistan.
The senator is facing a challenge for the 2010 democratic nomination for Pennsylvania senator against U.S. Representative Joe Sestak (Pa.-7).
Former Representative Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) is the front runner among Republicans seeking the seat in 2010.
