Students were able to buy Phillies tickets for the Sep. 28 game against the Houston Astros. The tickets were on sale for $10 in various places around Creese Student Center and Korman Quad. Last year this was a very popular event despite some unfortunate rainy weather.
On Monday, Jewish Student Life at Drexel sponsored the Welcome Back Week carnival on Buckley Green's Volleyball Courts. The event featured a climbing wall, dunk tank, tie-dye station and food. Student Life, Hillel, the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and Achayot B'Yichud were present at the event.
"The carnival was a great success and it brought out a good number of students to the event. The climbing wall and dunking booth were especially cool attractions. There was free food including Italian ice, always a treat, and good music," according to David Bagley, a sophomore majoring in biology and a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi.
Hard-hat tours of the renovated recreation center were held throughout the week of Sep. 21. Students were able to see the new rock-climbing wall area, squash courts, indoor track and the 18,000-square feet of fitness and weights area.
"I think it was cool for them to offer hard-hat tours [of the DAC]. It is really coming along. Unfortunately, I am graduating this year so I won't have a lot of time to enjoy it," Jordan Osecki, a senior computer science major, said.
Nicole Hinterberger, a freshman physical therapy major who also attended the hard-hat tour, said, "It was definitely very interesting to see what the DAC renovations would soon become, but it took a lot of imagination to do so. I wasn't all that impressed by the current state of the DAC, but it sounds like the new DAC is going to be great."
Amey Khanolkar, a sophomore mechanical engineer, also went on the hard-hat tour. He is a member of the Drexel men's squash team, and said he was really excited about the two new squash courts coming up in the recreation center.
"The University has built this facility with the students' interests in mind and the Rec Center is going to improve the quality of the student experience at Drexel. I see myself playing a lot of squash here, then relaxing and eating at Landmark Americana going rock-climbing or jogging on the indoor tracks," Khanolkar said.
Ben Tweddale, a senior biomedical engineering major said the new DAC looks sweet and he can't wait to finally have air conditioning in the gym.
The last activity on Monday was a Candy Happy Hour at Hagerty Library's Bookmark Café. The event included free coffee and candy to jumpstart the energy rush for the new academic year. The event was also an opportunity for students to check out the new Taco Bell Express.
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Center City Hahnemann campus hosted Taste of Philly and an information fair. The latter was for students to learn about Philadelphia and the Center City campus. Information was provided about Drexel departments, upcoming events, local attractions, student organizations, public transportation, voting and more. Taste of Philly included foods famous to the Philadelphia area like free soft pretzels, Tastykakes and Herr's snacks.
Tuesday was also Peanut Butter and Jelly Day. The event, sponsored by the Panhellenic Council, was held in the Creese Center lobby. The event consisted of putting together peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to give to the Our Brother's House shelter.
Student Life sponsored the Live Green event on Tuesday to promote more environmental room decorations. The offices of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Commuter, Graduate and Transfer Student Programs collaborated to turn everyday trash into treasures to help decorate student living space. Students could collect and bring their own recyclable materials such as cereal boxes and magazines to make green-friendly arts and crafts.
The Activities Unlimited event that was supposed to occur in Korman Quad Wednesday between 12 and 2 p.m. has been rescheduled to Sept. 30 due to weather. This event will have student representatives from more than 100 student organizations so that new students can see the activities present at Drexel.
There were sporting events to help acclimate the new Drexel sports fans as well, such as the Men's soccer match against Iona.
On Sept. 23. the women's field hockey team played against the Temple Owls at Vidas Field. At the event, Drexel's DAC Pack held sign-ups and gave out t-shirts to new students.
On Sept. 24, the women's soccer team played against Northeastern University, which is our conference rival and fellow co-op school in a battle for post-season positioning.
Along with Drexel sporting events, there were also a multitude of smaller intramural events such as Flag Football Preseason at Buckley Field Sept. 23 and the various tournaments to be held Sept. 26 including intramural tennis, flag football and intramural soccer.
Some classic Welcome Back Week events will be returning from last year throughout the upcoming weekend including Campus Philly College Day and Campus Kickoff Block Party Sept. 26.
