The Drexel women's soccer team kicked off its 2009 season with a 4-2 loss to LaSalle Aug. 25 at Vidas Field.

However, the future looks bright for the Dragons (0-1) as a trio of freshmen had standout performances.

Juliana Speroni and Sydney Douglas each scored her first-ever goals late in the second half, while goalie Nicole Sinclair made three saves in net.

The Explorers (1-0) scored the game's first four goals - two of which coming off the foot of Ally Kenney - en route to victory.

Kenney's first tally came in the 36th minute to break a scoreless tie late in the first half. She expanded La Salle's lead to two with a goal in the 59th minute and Kierstyn Mabey made in 3-0 approximately two minutes later.

Sara Copare gave the Explorers a four-goal cushion when she booted home a penalty kick.

Speroni finally got Drexel on the board in the 80th minute when she converted off a pass from another freshman, Megan Mohan.

Douglas got the Dragons to within two in the 84th minute, but it was too little, too late.

Drexel outshot La Salle 14-13; However, Explorers' goalie Melissa Sanger came up with four crucial saves.

This season the Dragons will attempt to build on their 7-11-1 mark in 2008.

The 2008 squad started off winning five of its first eight games.

However, Drexel came away victorious just twice in its final 11 despite being outscored by just one, 27-26, for the season.

The Dragons return nine starters from last year's team and will be led this season by their top goal scorer sophomore forward Jenna Lindsay.

Lindsay had a program-record 10 goals in 2008 on her way to earning a place on the CAA All-Rookie team.

Drexel will complete its non-conference schedule before the start of the fall term.

The Dragons' first game in the Colonial Athletic Association will be Sept. 24 at home against Northeastern.

Drexel will wrap up its ergular season Oct. 30 against Delaware in Newark, Del.
