When the award was announced, Lawson may have been the last of her teammates to know.
"I didn't know until a few of my teammates called me and told me," Lawson said. "After checking drexeldragons.com I was very excited."
Lawson should have expected quite a few awards after recording a goal in all but one of the team's games this year. The junior midfielder led the Dragons with 39 goals, her highest single-season total during her three-year career. Among her fellow conference opponents, Lawson was ranked sixth in goals-per-game with an average of 2.29 per contest.
When asked about what contributed to her success this season, Lawson pointed toward her supporting cast.
"The team's ball movement really allowed me to receive the ball in good spots," Lawson said.
In addition to Lawson's recent accolades, she received Second Team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors in late April. Against conference opponents, the Drexel junior notched 22 goals in only seven games. Lawson's conference play included an incredible six-goal performance against Hofstra and a five-goal performance against William & Mary.
Lawson's individual success in the CAA did not leave her satisfied upon completion of the team's 0-7 conference record.
"None of my goals matter if we lose," Lawson said. "The game's outcome is much more important."
The 2009 season was a disappointing one for Lawson and the Dragons. After a 7-1 start to the season, Drexel dropped eight of its last nine, including seven losses to conference opponents.
The team's collapse could have been due to a lack of experience among its players.
"Our team was so young this year," Lawson said. "Many of our players went from getting no playing time last year to full starters this year."
Even though Lawson was not satisfied with the team's finish in 2009, she is optimistic about the team's future in 2010.
"I'm excited to see what my teammates can do with one more year of playing time," Lawson said. "With the loss of upperclassmen from 2008, the younger players received a lot of game experience."
Lawson was able to earn a couple of well-deserved awards upon completion of this past season, but there is a sense of disappointment in her voice still when talking about it. Drexel fans should expect another intense season from Lawson, and an improved effort from the team overall in 2010.
