The Fashion Design and Design & Merchandising Programs in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design at Drexel University will present their annual fashion show June 6 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., featuring a wide variety of looks from bright colors, to fun dresses, to sleepwear and much more.
The annual Drexel Fashion Show is a culmination of students' education and the skills that they have honed from entering the University. This is no easy feat, either. All the design students have put in hours of work into their lines and sacrificed a lot to finish them. This year's show will feature original designs from 20 graduating seniors and eight graduate students.
"I found myself working, besides hour-and-a-half classes, nine to five," a senior fashion design major Jessica Saphire, whose sleepwear line is being featured in the show.
"I would work a little more [sporadically] like 1 to 3 [p.m.]," Keturah Drake, a graduate student, said, agreeing on the extensive amount of work. "But you were doing work every night. I worked through Christmas. I only went home for one day."
Drake's line is inspired by a garment her friend gave her from India.
Fashion design students begin the research for their collections in the fall and spent the next seven months creating pieces that exemplify their vision. Each student illustrates and then creates the patterns and final garments with great precision.
The fashion show is produced from start to finish by students, who create an impressive production to rival professional shows.
The undergraduate and graduate fashion design programs are nationally recognized. The rigorous curriculum consists of a unique six-month co-op experience that complements coursework in conceptual design, presentation skills, CAD and manufacturing procedures. Students conclude their senior year with the presentation of their collections in the Drexel Fashion Show, an impressive event featuring professional models that attracts an audience of 1,500.
This year, for the first time ever, the show will be held for the first time at the Urban Outfitters Corporate Headquarters at the Navy Yard. Urban Outfitters Inc. is an internationally recognized clothing company with brands such as Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free People.
This year's program will include a VIP reception honoring Drexel alumna Carole Hochman, CEO and creative director of Carole Hochman Design Group. The Carole Hochman Design Group manufactures the designer's own brand of sleepwear, loungewear and daywear, and owns licenses for lingerie and sleepwear collections by Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Jockey and Betsey Johnson.
Tickets are $25 for the 4 p.m. show and $50 for the 8 p.m. show. A reception will follow the 8 p.m. show.
