ESPN The Magazine honors Hynes, Ambler

Senior diver Kate Hynes and junior men's lacrosse player Colin Ambler have been named to "ESPN The Magazine's" Academic All-District at-large teams. Each garnered a first-team selection.

According to the College Sports Information Directors of America, all nominees must be a starter or important reserve for their respective teams, while simultaneously maintaining at least a 3.30 grade point average. Also, the student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's games.

Hynes and Ambler have had remarkable seasons on and off the field for their respective teams. For their academic honors, Hynes finished with a 3.83 grade point average, while Ambler finished with a 3.60. Both are business administration majors.

As for their on-field accomplishments, these athletes are in a class of their own. This past year, Hynes and Ambler were named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic Performers of the Year for their respective sports. This was Hynes' third time winning the award, while it was Ambler's first.

Hynes was named CAA Diver of the Year and was also named Most Outstanding Diver at the CAA Championships. Hynes won both of these awards for the fourth consecutive year. She also won the 1-meter and 3-meter board championships at the NCAA zones for the third time. She finished up her extraordinary season with a NCAA onsolation final victory on the 3-meter board.

Ambler, an attackman, led the men's lacrosse team in goals (21), assists (16) and points (37) this past season on his way to being named first-team All-CAA. In 2008 he was name CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year. Ambler is also a five-time member of the Dean's list.

Some more well known names have also been selected as Academic All-Americans by "ESPN The Magazine." New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young, former Utah Jazz point guard John Stockton and Hall of Fame center Bill Walton all formerly garnered the honor.
