Second Annual Pi
Kappalooza benefits
three charities

The brothers of Pi Kappa Phi will be hosting their second annual Pi Kappalooza May 16 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Pi Kappalooza will feature five bands: El Fuego, The 5th Floor, The Static Jacks, Southern Fried Funk and Boomfantasy Band of Dreams.

"We've gathered bands of genres from pop to blues to come together," Steven Wettenstein, the public relations chair for Pi Kappa Phi, said.

The concert will be an afternoon organized to raise money and awareness for three different charities - Dragonfly Forest, the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and United Service Organizations.

Pi Kappa Phi chose these three charities because each one has a different mission, according to Wettenstein.

In addition, Pi Kappa Phi wants to raise awareness of supporting charities across the board, instead of supporting just one specific cause.

"I really liked the idea of having a charity event where people can pick what charity they would like to support," Wettenstein said.

Sigma Psi Zeta hosts Take Back the Night event

Korrine Diggs from Stop Modern Slavery spoke at Sigma Psi Zeta's fifth annual Take Back the Night event May 13.

As the national philanthropy of Sigma Psi Zeta, Take Back the Night seeks to end various forms of abuse and violence against women.

Yong Weng, a member of the sorority, said one of Diggs' focuses during the event regarded human trafficking.

"[This event] gives survivors of violence, whether male or female, an opportunity to speak out and share their story, while giving hope to others who are still suppressed," Weng said.

In addition to the presentation, the sisters of Sigma Psi Zeta had the Clothesline Project, Purple Ribbon Project and a candlelight vigil at the event.

"Everyone has the right to be free from any form of violence and should have the right to be heard. Together, we can break the silence and lend a hand to those who need it," Weng said.

A representative of AVON cosmetics was in attendance at the event in order to promote the company's support of the empowerment of women.
