According to Katie Peoples, Fraternity and Sorority Life director, Greek Week provides its participants with a chance to celebrate leadership, scholarship, participate in community service and foster relationships.
"It's not a myth that Greek Week is the best week of our lives. This week helps you to appreciate every member of your chapter and to realize how much everyone brings to the table. You walk away from it loving your chapter even more than you already did," Alexandra London-Gross, a Delta Zeta sister, said.
Even though it is often labeled as "Greek Week," there are two weeks of competition for the different organizations.
An addition this year is the painting of benches, now located on Lancaster Walk, by the Multicultural Greek Council.
"The installation of these benches allowed the members of our multicultural fraternities and sororities to have physical representation on the Walk, similar to the blocks painted by the members of the IFC and PHC groups," Peoples said.
Though Greek Week 2009 technically kicked off at the Annual University City 5K May 1, the week before included Powderpuff and flag football tournaments.
"Nothing brings our sisterhood closer together than practice, practice, practice. Nothing makes you feel a stronger sense of pride than hearing your sisters cheer for you at every event you participate in. Greek Week is about dedication, pride and excellence," Pamela Lowy, a Delta Phi Epsilon member, said.
In addition, Greek Life held its Annual Blood Drive April 28, where the participation was overwhelming; volunteers donated over 270 pints of blood, which will help up to 810 individuals requiring blood.
"This year we outgrew our blood drive site location and had to add a second donor site for the Greek Week Blood Drive," Peoples said.
Over 200 volunteers and 160 runners from Greek Life participated in the Annual University City 5K, which benefits the Nicholas Pipino Memorial fund May 1.
All funds raised last week by fraternity and sorority members will benefit the Papadakis, Ian Alexander and John Williamson and the Nicholas Pipino Memorial Funds.
