The Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee has set aside $1,585,740 for Drexel University line items and student organizations in the 2010 fiscal year, according to Joseph Gonzalez, SAFAC budget coordinator.

The allocation money comes from the $150 student activity fee required of all students at the start of the school year. This year's amount is $100,000 more than what was allocated in fiscal year 2009, but Gonzalez said more student organizations have applied for money as well. This year, SAFAC funded 179 student organizations.

"Going into fiscal year 2010 applications, SAFAC funded the most groups it has ever funded," Gonzalez said. "While we know that many student organizations continue to ask for more money, we hope that they all understand that as the number of student organizations continues to grow on campus that the money available to distribute to all of them fluctuates only slightly which means less money to each individual organization."

Alex Ewing, SAFAC club sports council representative, said the committee worked hard to ensure that organizations receive equal funding by creating three new positions to represent different aspects of campus life including club sports, fraternity and sorority life and the Undergraduate Student Government Association.

"I believe that in regards to efficiency and equality this year, SAFAC has made huge strides with the creation of [these positions]," Ewing said. "Creating these positions outsources these decisions to people who have more knowledge on the subject matter and can make more appropriate decisions."

Allison Gress, the fraternity and sorority life representative for SAFAC, said the board made "precise" decisions to make sure student money went back to the students and their organizations.

The final allocation budget for the following fiscal year is estimated according to the number of enrolling students, the amount of unused and returned allocation money from the previous two years, and the contingency, which is deducted.

Line items include reserve funding, the Student Organization Resource Center budget, and music licenses and fees that allow music to be played at events on campus.

$50,500 to the Lexerd? Even though they never get the yearbook out on time, and nobody cares about it? That's absurd.

Well Candice, since you seem to know so much about the Lexerd, can you tell me how many students actually get one? Also, do you charge for them? I understand it needs a lot of money to make it, but I just feel that for the seemingly small amount of students that actually care about it, that the amount is a little high. (Continued…)
