Who wouldn't want to save money these days? Until recently, the prevailing mindset of the consumer had been "get-it-before-it goes." Almost overnight, the unthinkable happened - the mentality of the diligent shopper switched to, "let's wait until the price comes down." In a recession, shoppers are looking for an investment that lasts and a must needed attitude adjustment toward shopping. The economy's current state has forced a dramatic change in the way we spend our money, causing frugality to be chic. Recently, there has been an emphasis on personal style and an arduously edited wardrobe that can stand the test of time. There are some easy steps that you can take to make your wardrobe "recession-proof."

First, take stock of your wardrobe. Most of us have a closet overflowing with forgotten items we never wear, which makes everyday dressing difficult. The first step to discovering your personal style is to take an inventory of your wardrobe and look at each piece with a contemporary eye. Set aside everything you have worn recently and those pieces you truly admire. Everything not in the keep pile should be tried on and examined with a critical mind. Eliminate items that are in poor condition, out of style, or just don't fit. After discarding the dead weight, your favorites and classics will comprise your everyday wardrobe.

Next, you can think like a fashion stylist by mixing and matching your pieces, testing how they can become fresh outfits. For inspiration, use magazines and create new collections from fashion spreads and advertisements.

When it comes to shopping in a recession, don't obsess over the latest must-have trends. Definitely focus on what you need to complete your wardrobe. Stock up on timeless classics you will wear for years to come. The core of any "Recessionista's" closet is a set of basics that can be interchanged and infused with an optimistic attitude toward fashion. When it comes to the essence of your closet, think quality, not quantity - a few well-chosen pieces can add a fresh look to an existing wardrobe.
