Campus Activities Board announced April 2 that hip-hop superstar Lupe Fiasco and mash-up artist Gregg Gillis, popularly known as Girl Talk, will be headlining Spring Jam 2009, set to take place May 9 at the Armory.
In the past, Spring Jam has featured acts like Ben Folds and the popular "Battle of the Bands" winner, but this year CAB is transforming the event from just a concert to a full-fledged philanthropic venture.
"This year it's 'Spring Jam: Rock Your Cause' - we want to get Drexel to come together and be involved," Gina Giannascoli, CAB's Traditions assistant director, said. "We've been working with a Spring Jam external committee, which are leaders of different organizations, like the DAC Pack and USGA, just to get a consensus on what people really want for Spring Jam. We wanted to make it something that people would identify with and want to be a part of this year."
Developed by Drexel students, Rock Your Cause started when Dan Levin, CEO of Phame Entertainment, approached CAB about using "their Spring Jam as a vehicle to inspire student service. CAB felt it was a great way to create something that could unite the entire University and help thousands of people in need. They thought it was something Drexel students would be proud to be part of," Levin said.
Rock Your Cause's "ultimate goal is to create the largest movement in the history of student philanthropy - to have every student in the country involved in service. And to make serving your cause cool," Levin explained.
"It's going to be a competition [amongst student organizations]. There are two categories: total number of hours volunteered and most money raised," Giannascoli said. A prize has yet to be determined for the winning team.
It's actually quite simple to become a part of Rock Your Cause - you might even be more involved that you thought! If you are a part of an organization that has been doing charity work or fundraising from January through this coming May, your group is qualified and can register online at www.rockyourcause.net. But don't fret if you are not - why not sign up and help CAB with their cause, WePAC?
