For the first time ever, Drexel's radio station, WKDU 91.7 FM, will be broadcasting all women's basketball games for this weekend's Colonial Athletic Association Tournament and any potential WNIT and NCAA Tournament games.
The top-seeded Dragons' first game will take place March 13 against No. 8 Towson. The pregame show begins at 11:30 a.m. and tip-off is scheduled for noon.
Drexel Hall of Famer Pat Delsi will be providing play-by-play for the weekend's games along with color commentary from WKDU personalities Brett Fischer and Mike Mazzeo. Fischer and Mazzeo host "Mazz and the Fisch Sports Radio" every Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and are extremely excited about the opportunity the weekend's games present.
"I am elated to earn the opportunity to be a part of broadcasting history on multiple facets," Fischer said. "We are doing something no other Drexel students have gotten to experience. To be a part of a broadcast where the women's team is making national headlines and has a chance to knock off a team that has won 17 straight CAA titles is sensational."
Broadcasts of Drexel sporting events at WKDU have been a long time coming. Mazzeo and Fischer initially approached executives at WKDU last year regarding a sports talk show.
"Mazz and the Fisch Sports Radio" was a success, and the hosts wanted to expand the impact of Drexel sports on the University's radio station. Mazzeo and Fischer first had the opportunity to broadcast the women's basketball team's season opener at American Nov. 16 and then were given the go ahead to broadcast the biggest game of the year for the Dragons against VCU Feb. 26.
The women's basketball team's win over the Rams vaulted it into first place in the CAA and into the number one position heading into the conference tournament. For Drexel students, faculty, staff and WKDU, there couldn't be a better season to begin airing women's basketball games.
WKDU members have been more than welcoming to the women's basketball broadcasts. Hosts have given or moved their own time slots in order to accommodate the primetime spots the games occupied.
