The importance of employment

In the current economic climate, more and more companies and institutions are establishing hiring freezes to save money. However, the University has now decided to continue to hire new faculty and staff. This is great news, as it is important to try to grow even in times of uncertainty.
During the Great Depression, from 1929 to 1933, college faculty was one of the fastest growing jobs in the country, according to the Historical Statistics of the United States. To some small degree, recessions are a boon to higher education as many people who have lost their jobs return to college to improve themselves.
Unemployment is one of the most serious indicators and consequences of recession, and anything we can do to mitigate it will have a positive impact on individuals and society as a whole. The budget may be tight, but eventually the economy will bounce back - we just have to tough it out and spend wisely so we're still standing when the crisis subsides.
