Drexel University Fraternity and Sorority life won five awards at the Northeast Greek Leadership Association 2009 conference.

The Drexel Greek community received five out of seven programming awards presented at the 2009 conference, the most of any school in attendance.

According to Katie Peoples, director of Fraternity & Sorority Life, there were 800 undergraduate students in attendance at the conference this year, eight representing Drexel's Greek Life.

"I could not be more proud of our fraternity and sorority community and the positive impact they have on campus life," Peoples said."It's wonderful to see our students recognized for their efforts and contributions."

The five awards won are Academic Achievement, Leadership & Educational Development, Philanthropy/Community Service, Risk Reduction and Management, and Council Management for both councils.

Natalie Shaak, assistant director of Fraternity & Sorority Life, scored one of the categories. However, she did not score the submissions by the Drexel Greek community.

"Winning these awards gives Drexel University a lot of Northeast attention, but it has national implications as well," Steve Quatrani, president of the InterFraternity Council, said.

In order to be eligible for the awards, each Greek community as a whole must submit for the awards. This year the InterFraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council worked together to create their submission to represent the Drexel Greek community at the NGLA, according to Quatrani.

"This change in format raised the level of performance required to achieve recognition at NGLA, because the councils must now demonstrate true collaboration in their efforts to create a successful fraternity and sorority experience," Peoples said.

Neither the University of Pennsylvania nor Temple University submitted for awards, according to Michele Keenan, president of the Panhellenic Council.

"[Winning the awards] shows how much our students care. A lot of this wouldn't even be possible either if we didn't do it with Drexel," Keenan said. "Everything we do, we do on campus - the campus lends us a hand … the more they give us a hand, the more they give us a place to go, the more awards we win."

According to Keenan and Quatrani, other colleges and universities now look to Drexel for leadership and organizational advice. The two were in attendance for the convention in Hartford, Conn. during the week of Feb. 18.
