But despite their optimism, the Dragons fell behind early and couldn't match the intensity of their opponent.
The Dragons lost 10-4 to the No. 5 Pennsylvania Quakers Feb. 21 at Franklin Field.
"I try not to have expectations going into a game like this, but I was hoping that we would keep them to single digits defensively," women's lacrosse coach Anne Marie Vesco said. "I knew that we were going to have a strong showing defensively and they're pretty much a powerhouse on the attacking end and the defensive end."
Becca Drylie-Perkins had two goals for Drexel and goalie Lauren LaBella had 11 saves. Charlotte Wood and Katie Blazer also scored goals for the Dragons.
Penn's Ali DeLuca scored three goals, including the first of the game just 36 seconds into the match.
Drexel (2-1) responded with a goal of its own, just 37 seconds later by Blazer.
But the Quakers had all the momentum and controlled the tempo for the remainder of the session, as Penn (1-0) went on a 7-0 run to close out the half.
In the first half, the Quakers outshot the Dragons 20-5, won 8-of-10 draws and had seven groundballs to Drexel's two.
But in the second half the Dragons looked like a new team.
Even though Penn played a stall-type offense in the second half, Drexel still spent much more time in the attack zone than it did in the first half and outscored the Quakers 3-2.
"The first half I was a little disappointed that we were playing a little flat and not sharp," Vesco said. "We were sort of letting Penn run all over us. We took it in at halftime and just said we have to step up and play our game and have quicker responses to the play at-hand. We made some adjustments subbing wise, and I think we had a much better half. I was really excited that we won the second half, and that was our goal."
Last year, also in its third game of the season, Drexel lost to Penn 6-5.
After facing La Salle Feb. 25, the Dragons play George Washington, Long Island and St. Joe's in three consecutive road games.
