The Drexel Democrats have chosen to endorse Seth Williams as the Democratic nominee for Philadelphia's upcoming district attorney election.
"We're an extension of the Democratic Party; we wanted to coincide with what they're doing," Giancarlo Stefanoni, president of Drexel Democrats, said.
Stefanoni said the Drexel Democrats wanted to endorse Williams because the group wants to get involved with the campaign, and the only way to really get involved and raise awareness is to have the entire group behind the candidate.
"People don't realize how much it will affect everybody so it's a great thing to get involved in," Elise Thomson-Hohl, vice president of Drexel Democrats, said.
A lot of the Drexel Democrats met Williams when he announced his candidacy at the National Constitution Center in December during a panel with the other candidates.
"It was a really great way to get to know the candidates one-on-one and find out what the whole race was about," Thomson-Hohl said. "We liked him because of the different way he was going to approach the district attorney position."
Stefanoni said his experience was the main reason for endorsing him.
All but one Democrat voted in favor of Williams, while the other abstained.
Endorsing Williams means the Drexel Democrats will devote all of their resources and free time to support him. The support will start with a petitioning process because candidates need to have a certain amount of signatures from all over the city, according to Stefanoni.
"After that, we'll canvas and phone bank and get the word out about the elections," he said.
The group chose not to endorse Obama in the past election, because although many of the Drexel Democrats were for Obama, they did not want to exclude anyone, Stefanoni added.
Thomson-Hohl said the Democrats are going to approach this election differently than the presidential race because it is on a lower scale, but that it will give the group more experience.
