After facing constant change, the question "who are you now?" becomes an almost inevitable phrase that floats in the back of peoples' minds. Since rock band This Providence started in 2001, singer Dan Young and guitarist Gavin Phillips have seen many members come and go. It has been a struggle for the band to keep changing lineups but they finally feel like they have gained a solid structure with the addition of drummer, Andy Horst, and bassist David Blaise. However, they had to step back and reexamine what the band had become. They needed to redefine "This Providence." With this in mind they chose to name their third full-length album, "Who Are You Now?"
"It really fit with our band. Kind of what we went through to get where we are now. We kind of asked ourselves that. Even though I'm the newest member, I think the band went through that with changing members. We kind of went through our identity crisis. Crises," Horst explained.
The album, due to release March 17 on Fueled By Ramen Records, is what the band describes as "straightforward" and "feel-good."
"We wanted to make a record that made us feel like music we love," Young said. "When we listen to the bands we love, like Oasis or The Killers, it makes us feel good. I think we wanted our record to be one of those records for people."
The track listing includes two songs from their recent EP and a new song they recently released online called "That Girl's a Trick" that seem to be already creating that "feel-good" vibe for fans. The band also recently filmed a video for their unreleased single, "Letdown."
By keeping the song as more of a surprise, Young stated that the band "wanted it to hit a little harder than it normally would" have if the song had been previously released. The members have been keeping track of the video's status through a blog on www.letdownvideo.com to allow fans in on some of what Horst described as "chaos." The video involves pirates and knights, but fans have to wait for the video's release until they find out exactly how they fit in.
