Letter to the editor
Issue date: 2/20/09 Section: Ed-Op
Dear Faculty, Staff and Friends,
The brothers of the Lambda Chi Phi Chapter of Alpha Chi Rho thank you for your support during these tough times. Brothers Ian Alexander and John Williamson will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
They were the role models that our members looked up to and strived to become. It is their blessed memory that has pulled our brotherhood closer together. For without our own individual support for one another we simply would not be able to stand through these times. It is your kind words, presence and contributions that are now helping us carry on.
It is almost impossible to recognize each person and organization, Greek and non-Greek, but we will surely try in this message. Please forgive us if we leave you out. Katie Peoples, director for fraternity and sorority life, John Cooke, assistant dean for campus engagement, and Natalie Shaak, assistant director for the Office of Campus Activities, were among the first to arrive. James Tucker, senior vice president for student life and administrative services, and David Ruth, dean of students, were also incredibly helpful. They provided us with comfort and advice and stayed with us throughout the week.
Father Vince Morabito of the Newman Center held services the day after the incident and provided individual counseling. Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity was one of the first to find out. Their immediate support and loving care made us feel as if we were a part of their family. Each of their brothers had one-on-one conversations with us to make sure we were pulling together. They, along with Sigma Phi Epsilon, hosted a prayer service after the vigil and invited us to share memories of Ian and John. Many organizations such as AEPi, Delta Phi Epsilon, Delta Zeta, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha and the offices of residential living and university housing provided meals for us.
During times of trouble like this it is hard to plan an event or dinner, and these catered meals suppressed that concern while bringing our brothers together to grieve. So many more also wrote correspondence to our chapter. The amount of letters, cards and e-mails surpassed anything we had ever seen. Our bulletin board is filled with cards from every single fraternity and sorority on campus as well as the Campus Activities Board, Buckley & Company, Temple's Interfraternal Council, co-workers and friends.
We thank you all so much. SigEp hosted a pasta dinner benefiting Ian and John. Of the $1,000 raised, half was donated to the Alpha Chi Rho Educational Foundation in honor of Ian, and the other half to Saint Pius Tenth - Respect Life Foundation in honor of John. The Interfraternal Council is having a three-on-three tournament with proceeds going to AXPEF.
This support was not expected by our chapter. It is most certainly a great surprise, and is greatly appreciated. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to their families and the four members seriously injured. We are wishing them a speedy recovery and hope to soon be within their presence again.
Sincerely,
The Brothers of Alpha Chi Rho
