WKDU hosted its "Drexel on Wheels" fundraiser Feb. 19 at the Carman Gardens Roller-Skating Rink in Germantown.

With the exception of a small donation from Drexel alumni, the event was sponsored and created by WKDU in order to bring the station, as well as other Drexel students, together for a night of entertainment in response to the lack of activities available on campus - especially in the cold winter months.

"There's so little things to do for kids in the winter that are active and indoors, especially for all ages," public relations director Delilah Knuckley said.

As a result of WKDU not being able to receive SEC grants for activities that are outside of the Drexel campus, the station worked hard and prioritized to fulfill a goal to raise enough money for the deposit of the roller skating rink, transportation for students as well as providing WKDU t-shirts for sale. With approximately 25 to 30 people in attendance and the cost of an individual ticket being $12, the station's objective was at the very least to break even on the money that was spent on all expenditures.

The number of tickets sold was not nearly as important as the fact that the affair brought in students of all different majors and backgrounds they may have otherwise not interacted with one another. WKDU, also comprised of students from a variety of majors, reached out to the language center by sending information about the event to encourage more international students to partake in this occasion who may usually spend the majority of their time in the center. Since Knuckley herself grew up roller-skating every weekend in her home state of South Carolina, she thought it would be an enjoyable experience as well as a great icebreaker for all involved.

"I thought it would be an excellent opportunity for people to meet each other," she said. "It's something for people to laugh about together and not worry about their relationships."

Indeed it was. I felt like time had turned back when a couple students arrived dressed in hippie attire and bright clothing reminiscent of the 1980s. The colorful disco and string lights helped to get students further in the mood to roller-skate in funny masks, tutus and elaborate Vegas showgirl headpieces. While many had trouble with the old school roller-skates, it didn't stop them from trying and most importantly having a good time when they did fall. In the midst of all this excitement, people enjoyed WKDU's DJs spinning a variety of music from "It's a Wonderful World" with a little psychedelic twist to Run DMC all while snacking on popcorn and pizza.

While WKDU may not have broken even on every single expense, this fundraiser was an investment in future events. According to Knuckley, the stations hopes these kinds of outings will be occurring monthly if its finances permit and if students are ready and willing to participate.

Judging from the exuberant students' faces wishing to do this again, they certainly will be.
