For the winter 2008-2009 term, Drexel will be following a finals week schedule running from Tuesday to Saturday.

According to Mark Greenberg, interim Provost, the change in the schedule is a result of the state of Pennsylvania looking into the finals schedules for each university and determining appropriate schedules.

Vice Provost John DiNardo added that the state regulation changed toward the end of the 2006-2007 academic year, but the University was unable to accommodate changes in the finals schedule before the current term.

"We got notification toward the end of the 2006-2007 academic year, sort of mid-2007, so we weren't prepared to make the change for 2007-2008," DiNardo said.

According to DiNardo, finals schedules are drawn up far in advance, with schedules currently drawn up until almost 2013, though they include a disclaimer that the schedule can change in this type of situation.

Drexel is required to have 10 hours per credit for each quarter for any course, according to Greenberg. When there is a Monday holiday within a term that removes a day of classes, the term is then extended over to the following Monday, and the exams are pushed to Saturday.

"This was pushed on us by state regulations," Greenberg said.

According to Greenberg, the school has avoided using Saturday for final exams in the past, but this year, doing so has been difficult because of Monday holidays. DiNardo added that Saturday has always been allotted as an exam day during finals week in the past, and that the school has thus far been able to avoid scheduling Saturday exams.

"I do know that in their last few years, the state of Pa. has been looking much more carefully at their schedules. It's been much more detailed, so if we take off Monday, we add a Monday, so we have 10 Mondays for a 10-week term," Greenberg said.

DiNardo said that this change is effective this term onward because in the fall term, the Thanksgiving holiday allowed for an extra Monday of classes.
