Perhaps Drexel should take care of its own researchers

Drexel announced Jan. 13 that it has established a $100,000 annual award for exceptional research, funded by another generous anonymous alumnus.
There are two sides to this award. On one hand, the University is supporting research beyond its walls, which can have a very positive impact on the scientific community and our lives. The University is also promoting the "Drexel brand" which could indirectly make Drexel graduates more appealing to new employers - especially in research fields.
Competing for funding is nothing new in research, but by making its own faculty ineligible for this award, we feel that Drexel is to some degree leaving them out in the cold. Why shouldn't some of that money be used to fund research here? Or, Drexel could encourage joint ventures between its faculty and those at other institutions.
Students and faculty members - especially in the liberal arts - struggle for a couple hundred, let alone a few thousand dollars for research. An investment of $100,000 could have a tremendous impact, making it possible to create many more research and job opportunities for students that have little or no opportunity to contribute to academic research at Drexel.

I find it odd for Drexel University to make its own faculty ineligible for a $100,000 annual award for exceptional research. Although this research award should not automatically go to Drexel faculty, Drexel should allow its faculty to be eligible for it. (Continued…)

This was the decision of an alumnus so the editorial and efforts should not attack the University, rather the wishes of an alumnus of the University. Surely he can spend his money as he sees fit. (Continued…)
