The Dragons trailed by as many as nine in the first half after Flint was issued a technical foul at the 3:03 mark and Maynor knocked down the ensuing free throws.
However, the "T" seemed to ignite Flint's team. Drexel countered with five consecutive points to cut the lead to 32-28 with 52 seconds left after Sammy Givens drove finished with a floater, but Bradford Burgess (13 points) knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer to send VCU to the locker room up seven.
Maynor, who came into the contest averaging 23.1 points per game, was relatively quiet in the first half scoring just six points on 2-of-6 shooting from the floor.
Colds led the Dragons with nine first-half points. He knocked down his only three-point attempt.
VCU jumped out of the gate early, taking a 13-5 lead after Maynor drove in for an uncontested bucket. But Drexel came back with six straight points, two thanks to a tremendous individual effort by Leon Spencer, whose block led to his own layup on the other end.
