Over the past term, Drexel University has been expanding steadily on its California campus, with greater program offerings in its Center for Graduate Studies and its future plans for an undergraduate campus.
Board of Supervisors of Placer County unanimously voted Nov. 4 to pass a resolution supporting the creation of the University campus on 1100 acres of land in the county, according to the Sacramento Business Journal.
According to Carl 'Tobey' Oxholm III, acting director of the Sacramento Center for Graduate Studies and chief of staff of Drexel University, eight separate resolutions addressing the Regional University Plan were scheduled to be seen by the board of supervisors.
Although a formal decision could not be made due to new information brought by residents opposing the plan, the board did pass a resolution that expressed their intent to pass the eight resolutions required to build the University campus. The board is expected to look over the new information and pass the resolutions at the December 9 meeting.
"The supervisors voted on a resolution that expressed their intent to pass the eight resolutions [required for the Regional University plan to proceed] when the matter returned to them on Dec. 9, and that vote was unanimous. That's why everyone is so confident that the resolutions will pass on Dec. 9," Oxholm said.
According to Oxholm, if the University plan is approved, Drexel will have five years to decide whether to accept the land for a California campus. If Drexel does not pursue the California campus, the owners of the land will offer it to other universities.
While plans for an undergraduate campus are still being considered, the Sacramento Center for Graduate studies is adding to the programs available to students. The California center for teacher accreditation gave an initial approval to Drexel's master's degree in the Science of Instruction program, allowing the University to start accepting students into the education major, according to William Lynch, dean of the Goodwin College of Professional Studies.
