Letter to the editor: Make recycling accessible in UCross
Web exclusive
Issue date: 12/5/08 Section: Ed-Op
Dear Editor,
I do not know if you are aware that University Crossings, which houses mainly Drexel University students, does not have recycling available to its residents. I am a resident at University Crossings, and since around a week after I moved in, I have been meeting with Chad Broadwell, the manager, trying to get recycling for every floor of the building.
After many e-mails, trips to his office and a petition on Facebook, I finally convinced Mr. Broadwell to get two canisters from Waste Management for recycling plastic, glass and aluminum. These canisters are supposed to be placed in the loading dock of University Crossings for residents to bring down their recyclables. However, the canisters have yet to arrive.
Despite this step in the right direction, many residents, including myself, feel that this is not enough. There should be recycling bins on every floor, for convenience sake. It would be difficult for someone from the 17th floor to bring recyclables all the way downstairs to the loading dock. This "hassle" may prevent many of the residents from recycling all together.
Secondly, the management is not planning on getting canisters for cardboard and paper, which are two materials that should also be recycled. I know that there are many residents at University Crossings and students around campus who are irritated by this; they have expressed their feelings on the wall of a Facebook group dedicated to this issue.
I hope that by informing The Triangle and the rest of campus about this issue, changes can be made.
