Crew moving into historic boathouse
Drexel Dragons
Issue date: 11/21/08 Section: Sports
The crew team made major headlines Nov. 19 with its announcement that Drexel University has entered into a 50-year lease, including two 20-year renewable options, with the historic Bachelors Barge Club located on the Schuylkill River Boathouse Row.
Beginning in July 2009, the Drexel crew program will be rowing out of the oldest rowing club in the nation.
This acquisition further cements the Dragons as one of the emerging rowing teams in the nation.
The Bachelors Barge Club was founded in 1853 and is still the oldest year-round operated rowing club in the country.
"This development with Bachelors is a 'win-win' situation for Drexel University and the Bachelors Barge Club," Drexel Director of Athletics Eric Zillmer said. "Drexel is committed to honoring this historic Philadelphia landmark and its member's legacy by attracting excellence in rowing and celebrating its proud tradition and position for future championships."
This announcement is even more significant due to the recent $1 million donation by Drexel alumnus and former football All-American Vince Vidas and his wife Judy to the crew program.
"With a prime location on Boathouse Row and the enthusiastic support of the athletic department and friends, this team has a lot of potential to be realized. This is our opportunity to put Drexel on the rowing map," Drexel Director of Rowing Paul Savell said.
