Craig Newmark, founder of the web site craigslist.com, will speak at Drexel Nov. 24 in a lecture open to the public, hosted by four colleges.
Newmark will be speaking on the subject of the Drexel interview, according to Suzanne Rocheleau, associate dean of special projects for the Pennoni Honors College.
Rocheleau said Newmark can offer a lot to students who are "entrepreneurial in spirit."
Newmark will be good because of the face he presents to students, she said.
"It's an important lesson for students that fame does not necessarily breed arrogance," Rocheleau said.
"The audience for Craig Newmark is a very wide audience. There are four colleges sponsoring this: the iSchool, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Pennoni Honors College and the Business school. They all feel that he can speak to students in any college or major," Rocheleau said.
Newmark said his web site started as a "simple CC list" in 1995 and has spread since through fairly simple means.
"We're closing in on 13 billion pages per month," Newmark said. "And it's pretty much all word-of-mouth."
According to Newmark, usage of the site is "disproportionately" 20-, 30-, and 40-year-olds, and is useful on a broad scale of areas.
"The idea is, if you're looking for a place to live, this can help," Newmark said. "Sometimes, it complements the use of recruiters somewhat for jobs. It's also good for part-time jobs."
In terms of college students, Newmark said the site has a lot to offer this demographic.
"If you're looking for a place to live, we tend to have a much broader range of apartments or rooms available than most other places. If you're looking for a part-time job or a short term gig, we have more variety along those lines. We have more opportunities for people to buy and sell stuff," Newmark said. "We're a very down-to-earth marketplace, a little bit like a flea market, and that's better than most other sites or arenas."
