Nov. 16, Drexel University will have the opportunity to experience something that has never been done in the history of the school. The Drexel University women's basketball team, the Lady Dragons, will have its game broadcasted over the air on Drexel's student radio station 91.7 WKDU.

The team will be heading to American University to kick off its season. This will not only be the first time that women's basketball is broadcasted on the station, but also the first time in about 35 years that any sporting event has been aired over WKDU.

It was not an easy task organizing and planning something this big. Larry Epstein, director of Arts Entertainment Management (EAM) and faculty advisor for WKDU, was approached by the Drexel Athletics Department with the possibility of bringing back sports broadcasting to the station.

"After careful consideration, we decided that it was not practical for last year, but that we would see what we could do for this season," Epstein said.

There were many factors to consider when approaching this issue that would determine whether the process would go over smoothly or not.

"We've been spending the last few months working on the staffing and technical requirements," Epstein said.

After all the months of hard work, WKDU is now ready to broadcast sports once again on the radio. As faculty advisor, it's Epstein's job to help the students who run the station fulfill their goals, provide a social environment where they can congregate and participate as a social community and radio station, as well as help them innovate in ways that reflect what's going on in the Drexel community.

Many others, along with Epstein, are involved in this intricate process going on at Drexel. Evan Bernard, the program director at WKDU, is in charge of what ultimately goes on the station, while also ensuring that the process goes as planned.

Bernard discussed his plans for the upcoming women's basketball game.

"I had to talk directly with everyone, and now I am engineering the board and making sure everything goes as smoothly as possible on my end," Bernard said. "Broadcasting this game will be a great opportunity for broadcasters such as Mike Mazzeo and Brett Fischer to try something they have never done before and were interested in doing."

Mazzeo, a junior at Drexel, and Fischer, a senior, are the Co-Sports Directors for WKDU. They have both been waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time, and are excited to finally get the chance. Mazzeo will be doing the color commentary for the game, while Pat Delsi will be doing the play-by play.
