My ideal candidate...
A series of reflections brought to you by the Freshman Writing Program

People who staunchly support one party or the other are a minority in America, but they generate a lot of attention because they are so vocal. An independent study by Princeton Survey Research found that 82 percent of Americans believe the two major parties are unable to address the country's issues, and that 73 percent of Americans favor alternatives to the two parties. If so many people really want change, and really believe that the Democrats and Republicans have lost track of what the American people care about, then now is the time to revise the established party system. Americans have done it in the past, and now is the time to do it again. Unity08 and other political reform movements are active right now, trying to, as a spokesman said, "Create a forum for people who are in the middle who have been left out of politics."
Because these organizations rely on grassroots support from real Americans, rather than lobbies or corporations, they are having trouble competing with the major parties. Unity08 was recently forced to suspend its efforts due to a lack of funding. If anyone tired of the paralysis of the two-party system truly wants change in this election, now is the time to help those parties who know that we need political reform.
