How do I host a successful out-of-office gathering with co-workers?

This is one event in our lives, sometimes known as the company picnic, which is unavoidable. I've been to a number of dreadful ones, but I've also seen my share of amazing ones. Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with the event itself. If co-workers don't get along in the workspace, they sure as hell won't at work parties. That being said, here are a few pointers from yours truly:

•Limit alcohol! I know some will come just for that open bar, but remember, people do things they regret when they are inebriated. I suggest serving dinner with a glass of wine, period. Keep a good selection though! Nothing ruins a good catfish like a bad merlot!

•Keep the fare agreeable. Don't be cheap! Again, a lot of people come because of the food. Let's face it-it's better than what they can cook themselves and it's free. Make sure it is something everyone will eat, so unfortunately ethnic food isn't always the right route. Such a shame-I do adore curry.

•Make it fun. A dull event can assure that the next will be half as full. You've spent your time and effort putting together this wonderful little party, so make it sparkle! And no, that doesn't automatically mean having door prizes. I shiver at the mere mention of this tacky tactic.

•Keep things simple. Have a reason people should come, make it a reality, and make sure the next day it's the water cooler talk.
