"We want to create a boom of salsa through the school exciting those around us," Nicole Echols, a junior majoring in Architectural Engineering said.
Echols, along with Kyung Chul Yoon and Rachel Kanney, created the salsa dance at Drexel. Echols and Kanney have been dancing for the local dance company for Buster Adams of Latin Nation Salseros Dance Co.
The idea for Salsa con Caché began with Echols, who said Drexel needed its own team as Drexel students had been dancing for University of Pennsylvania's dance team, Onda Latina.
"The most difficult part for me was formulating a constitution that best fit the mission of team, to perform and/or compete locally or nationally and in the process educate the Drexel community of Latino culture through song and dance," Echols said.
To accomplish this, Salsa con Caché holds dance workshops that are open to, not just students, but other members of the community as well.
However, adequate funding has become a problem for them.
"We are struggling with ideas to fundraise so we can be the best that we can be," Echols said.
Currently, Salsa con Caché is planning a dance party in January 2009 to help fundraise for necessities that Drexel has not given the team, such as costumes and conference expenses.
"My goal for this team is to be made a varsity sport at Drexel and with more hard work and dedication and proper funding, I think I can take my team to that level," Echols said.
Echols is also a member of the Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. Omicron chapter at Drexel University, which won second place at the Puerto Rican Day Parade a few weeks ago.
