Pinhead Gunpowder releases album after hiatus

The first song on the EP, "West Side Highway," starts out like many of their classic album openers. Ringing chords and Armstrong's snotty vocals lead into the song before the drums kick in and the track takes off. "West Side Highway" has everything that listeners have grown to expect from a Pinhead Gunpowder record-tight drums, melodic vocals, heavy guitar, and that classic bass sound. The lyrics on this one are unique-almost like reading one of Cometbus' old zines as he tells one of his stories.
The second song, "Anniversary," brings more of the same. Even though it does not have the tradeoff of vocals as found on "West Side Highway," it is still a strong tune. The last song on the b-side, "On the Ave," is a slower, acoustic number joined in by female vocals. It seems out of place, yet still fits in well with the rest of the EP. "On the Ave" is a punk love story, not unlike a lot of their other songs. If people still made mixtapes, I'd put my money on seeing this song on a crust punk's mix to his spiky-haired girlfriend real soon.
If you're hoping to hear a classic PG-rated record, you won't be disappointed at all with Pinhead Gunpowder's self-titled EP. This captures their sound perfectly. I'm probably going to have to buy a new one, because at this rate, the grooves will be wearing down from playing the record so much. I'd be interested in a new full-length, but seeing as the band hardly has time to collaborate and play shows, unfortunately, I don't see another release happening anytime in the near future.
