However, with less than 30 minutes remaining, the Seahawks had one final charge left, and ultimately it brought them a stunning overtime win.
UNCW scored three consecutive goals - two to tie the game in regulation - with the final tally coming on a penalty kick by Daniel Roberts in the 99th minute in the extra session, as the Seahawks defeated Drexel 4-3 in its conference opener Sept. 27 at Vidas Field.
"It's really disappointing when you come out to a 3-1 lead and then lose," Drexel junior midfielder Greg Ermold said.
Roberts, who tied the game in the 76th minute - also on a penalty kick - had a pair of goals for UNCW (4-5-0), while Devan Carroll and Nassim Berhouni added one apiece.
Mike Crosse, Chris Schieve and Todd Wampler each scored in a losing effort for the Dragons (2-4-2), who outshot the Seahawks 20-8 and have now gone winless in their past six matches (0-4-2).
Crosse, who ironically had not scored since 2006, ended Drexel's scoring drought and gave it the lead as he beat two defenders and converted on a through ball from Andrew Goldberg in the 17th minute.
Schieve extended the Dragons' cushion to two 15 minutes later on a very fluky goal. Schieve had just entered the game as a substitution less than two minutes before his goal, which resulted from a low cross in front of the net that Schieve charged at. He was then awkwardly flipped by UNCW's goalie, who was also charging the ball. The ball then proceeded to ricochet off Schieve's back and into the goal.
"It was just a scrappy goal," Schieve said.
After Carroll got the Seahawks within one late in the first half, Todd Wampler scored in the 64th minute to put Drexel back up two.
Berhouni cut the lead back to one just two-and-a-half minutes later before Roberts's late game heroics.
Coach Lew Meehl believed that the team was not prepared for UNCW's dangerous style of playing behind the defense. Meehl stated that there were numerous times where UNCW's forwards were able to get behind the Drexel defenders and create scoring opportunities.
