Many people are unaware that Drexel has a National Championship under its belt.

However, in 1958, the men's soccer team accomplished the feat. After posting a perfect 12-0 record and defeating Lehigh 5-2 in the Mid-Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship game, the Dragons were voted the No. 1 team in the nation by the Intercollegiate Soccer-Football Association of America.

At the time, the vote, similar to today's BCS in college football, served as the determinant as to who was named the National Champions.

At halftime during the Sept. 27 Drexel-UNC Wilmington match, the team was honored in the 50th Anniversary of its National Championship.

"[Our team was a goal scoring machine, wasn't it," Charles Jones, a member of the team, said.

That year, the Dragons outscored their opponents 76-15.

Other members of the team said that they felt blessed and privileged to be part of such an accomplishment. Jones added that the team had two key factors that led to their success. One, that they had assurance in their coaches. And two, the team had the ability to do what the coach wanted.
