While it may have seemed like just a sidebar due to the historical groundbreaking event outside the Daskalakis Athletic Center, the Drexel University Recreation Department held its annual Kickoff Event for Rec Sports Sept. 23 along Lancaster Walk.
A variety of tables lined the path, as interested students were able to interact with members of all 33 club teams, intramural teams, fraternities and sororities. Each organization was given the opportunity to introduce itself in an effort to recruit new members.
"This is just a wonderful promotional opportunity," Associate Director of Recreation-Intramurals, Steve Koch, said. "Students are going to walk out of here with an idea of what they can do activity wise and that's what this is all about."
An estimated 100 more students turned out for the event from the previous year.
"Typically we'd do it [the event] right in front of the DAC and get some walk-through traffic, but I think they've [the students] assembled because we've done a good job of getting the word out and they're excited about this new building," Koch said.
Associate Athletic Director Dan Simmons said he was encouraged by the event.
"Just seeing all these tables is unbelievable," Simmons said. "To see all these clubs out here getting new sign-ups. There's definitely a ton of energy here."
Students will now have the opportunity to participate in three new club sports: triathlon, women's squash and field hockey.
"I think students know that when they come in as freshmen that we [the rec and intramural staff] hit them early," Koch said. They know what's being offered."
Simmons credited Koch with the success of the event this year and gave him the ultimate complement.
"Steve Koch is worth his weight in gold," he said.
And thanks to the hard work and dedication of the athletic department and the commitment of the University to expand and improve its athletic facilities, a student's ability to continue his or her playing careers in college has never been greater.
