Justin Gero, a junior majoring in history & politics, was elected the new editor in chief of The Triangle for the fall and winter terms.

Justin Gero, former op-ed editor of The Triangle, has been elected as the new editor in chief for the fall and winter terms.

As EIC, Gero said he wants to get more students involved by trying different recruitment methods and having more activities and rewards for staff.

"I want to go out to classrooms, meet with professors and students and promote The Triangle experience," he said.

Another goal of Gero's is to complete the redesign of The Triangle's web site and to continue creating other mediums for students to access news such as blogs and videos.

"Print newspapers are pretty much a one-way medium. Having a web site and blogs give students more opportunities to respond to us," Gero said.

Gero said members of the paper began redesigning the web site during the end of the summer and are very happy for the site's launch coming soon. Along with the web site, he also plans to work with the blogs, including the addition of video and podcasts.

The previous EIC, Noah Cohen, has taken an advisory role at The Triangle and is still active on the editorial board. Cohen said one of his biggest contributions was building the continuity of the newspaper.

"I think first off I was able to build the staff a lot and add new talented staff members to the paper," he said.

Gero said both Ali Qari, another former EIC, and Cohen did a great job and he hopes to continue the projects they started.

"I hope people continue to improve the web site - we just scratched the surface," Cohen said. "We should stop thinking as weekly paper; we need to be filling out web site with content as it becomes available if we're going to continue. It's a weakness, but can quickly become a strength."

Apart from continuing web site work, Gero said he would also like to expand the business department.

"I really wish students would know they don't just have to be writers or editors. We have about $180,000 in revenue every year, and we need people to manage that," he said.

Gero's long term goals involve, "Setting up online advertising and finding a responsible way to compensate staff for all of their hard work."

Gero is currently a junior in the BS/MS program majoring in history & politics and science, technology and society. He started writing commentary at The Triangle as a sophomore, was promoted to op-ed editor, and served in that position until ascending to his current role as EIC.
