The iSchool at Drexel University has named professor Toni Carbo its program leader at the Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento, Calif. and University administrators have been working on the California Center over the summer to raise awareness about Drexel's new graduate programs in California.
Carbo, who has earned masters and doctoral degrees from the iSchool, has served as a dean and professor at the University of Pittsburgh will be the program leader for the iSchool's graduate degree programs in California, according to Susan Haine, writer and editor for the iSchool.
According to Carbo, she originally planned to teach at Drexel's California center during the summer so that she could spend more time with her daughter, who resides in California. However, as the program progressed, Carbo was offered the position of program leader to expand and spearhead the iSchool's graduate programs on the West Coast.
"[Carbo] is a leader in the information field, and brings with her extraordinary experience in education and research that will vastly benefit our students and our information science program as a whole," David Fenske, dean of the iSchool, said.
According to Brenda Sheridan, director of college relations at the iSchool, Carbo is nationally known for her research and activities in the information technology fields, and therefore is a perfect choice for the program leader position. Carbo's formal duties as program leader include promoting the iSchool's programs by creating research opportunities and expanding the school's contacts with businesses and other universities in the Sacramento area.
However, Tobey Oxholm, executive vice president and chief of staff at Drexel, said the California Center for Graduate Studies will not just be a separate campus, but will be closely tied to the main University City campus through online classes and collaboration of faculty at both locations.
The iSchool displays a similar unity by describing the graduate program to be located in "Sacraphillymento," according to Haine.
