"We finally have a partnership between the students, the administration and the faculty, " Tony Caneris, the former Senior Vice President for Student Life and Administrative Services said.
The $41.6 million 84,000 sq. ft. building, scheduled to open in December 2009, is over double the size of the recreation space in the DAC and will put a major focus on helping the environment.
"The University is getting better and better by the day," President Constantine Papadakis said. "We need to provide not only good quality education for the students, but also an environment where our students can enjoy their learning process. This has become the focus of the management team here to create an environment conducive to learning and that is also enjoyable to the students."
The new Recreation Center will feature a climbing wall; multi-purpose gym; suspended jogging track overlooking new basketball courts; 18,000 square feet of fitness equipment space; two squash courts with seating; a juice bar; a 6,000-square-foot sports grille restaurant; and several other additions.
"This is surrealistic for me," Director of Athletics Eric Zillmer said. "It's a dream come true. For many years, we were just talking about it. I was trying to get people interested in it, but the only people interested were the students. This could not have been done without [them]."
Not forgetting about its campaign for "green" advocacy, Drexel is making good on its promise to help better the environment at the University.
The integral glass and metal panel façade together with light scopes on the roof will provide enough daylight to eliminate the use of electric lights during the day in 87 percent of interior occupied space.
