Officials at Drexel University thought they found the first Director of Police Operations when they hired veteran Police Commander Michael Sinclair Sept. 2, but Sinclair told University officials he could not accept the position due to "personal reasons," according to those involved with the hiring.
Sinclair, who is chief of police in Nazareth, Pa., told a local newspaper the University's announcement had been "premature," according to an article in Express Times.
Drexel officials described a different series of events.
The announcement of Sinclair's hiring was sent to The Triangle Sept. 4 after he had his official portrait taken, signed a letter of employment Sept. 2, attended a new employee orientation Sept. 8 and was issued a University vehicle, James Katsaounis, executive director of communications for the Division of Student Life and Administrative Services, said.
"He [Sinclair] will receive compensation for his one day of employment while attending new employee orientation," Katsaounis wrote in an e-mail. While attending orientation at Drexel, Sinclair was also employed as police chief in Nazareth.
Sinclair told Senior Associate Vice President for Public Safety Domenic Ceccanecchio Sept. 9 that because of undisclosed personal reasons, he would not be taking the job at Drexel, Katsaounis said.
Ceccanecchio said he had a specific replacement candidate in mind based on recommendations from the selection committee.
"This individual will also be interviewed by a student/faculty committee before getting a one-on-one interview with me," Ceccanecchio wrote in an e-mail.
