Innovation and creativity are key when it comes to pioneering a specific field or task. From the turn of the 20th century, the critically acclaimed Philadelphia Orchestra has done just that.

Since the beginning of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1900, eight musical directors along with hundreds of musicians has transformed the way the world hears, views and receives classical music content. It is a gift to have one of the world's leading orchestras right in our own Philadelphia backyard.

During the first half of the 20th century, the Orchestra made groundbreaking electrical recordings, performed on soundtracks for feature films, was the first American orchestra to travel transcontinentally, and garnered several other musical feats. Their sound reaches over 1 million listeners and showcases more than 300 performances annually. Aside from concerts at their home stage of the Kimmel Center, the Orchestra can be seen at New York City's Carnegie Hall, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and Philadelphia's Mann Center during the outdoor summer season.

The Philadelphia Orchestra strives to bring music to the local community. In early September, the Orchestra introduced two new ticketing programs, eZseat and eZseatU. Both provide discount tickets for a small annual fee, yet the latter caters to the Philadelphia student population.

Raina Fields, who works for the Philadelphia Orchestra, started the eZseatU program in order to "eliminate a lot of the hassle" and "provide convenience" to college students looking to become more culturally engaged through classical music.

For just $25, any student can become a part of the eZseatU College ticket program. With this membership, students can receive unlimited access to over 100 concerts all season, discounts at area restaurants, print-at-home ticketing and much more. It really is a bargain when you compare prices to other entertainment costs in Center City Philadelphia.

"There is no hassle with coming to the box office or dealing with anyone on the phone. This new program builds on the successes that we've had in the past with our college students, who have been very supportive and enthusiastic about our programs," Fields said.

To kick off the eZseatU College ticket program, the Philadelphia Orchestra will be hosting a free concert for college students at their home stage of Verizon Hall, a 2,500 seat venue within the Kimmel Center, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Following the performance, an exclusive party will be held in the Commonwealth Plaza, with food, entertainment and prize giveaways.

This is an event not to be missed! Although it is free, students must register online and print out a ticket at home before arriving at the Kimmel Center. To register, log on to www.philorch.org, click "College Students" under the "Concerts & Subscriptions" tab and continue on with registration from there. It is very simple and takes only minutes to complete. See you at the show!
