End-of-season films bring on laughs

What if no one actually died at the end of "Hamlet?" That is the thought that runs through failed actor/drama teacher Dana Marschz's (Steve Coogan) mind as he writes and produces an original play for his barely-funded acting program. Ever since losing out in the acting world, Marschz takes on his love of the art by teaching high school students how to act in remakes of hit films of the 80s and 90s, like "Erin Brockovich." Needless to say, his directorial reviews are far from commendable and funding is threatened to be cut unless the school board is "wowed" by Marschz's next performance.
By writing "Hamlet 2," Marschz unites several students from racial and economical backgrounds, allowing them to work together to build confidence and a great musical. Using time-machines, a Jesus figure with a swimmers body and visual references to past works of popular live arts, "Hamlet 2" stands out amongst the average high school musical.
The film seemed to lack a sense of direction, moving off-track a few times, but eventually getting back on for a decent ending. Some figures could have been removed without even making any difference to the plot, while a few prominent figures could have been developed a little better as main characters.
With extremely dry humor, roller-skating modes of transportation and songs like "Rock Me Sexy Jesus," Fleming's latest comedy should give you a nice chuckle to wrap up the end of your summer. "Hamlet 2" is currently playing in select theaters, but will soon be released nationwide.
Rating: ???/5
