Frank Elegar has racked up a plethora of frequent flyer miles working out for numerous NBA teams in preparation for the 2008 NBA Draft.
But on June 24 he found himself right at home at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, working out for the 76ers.
"It's a good feeling," Elegar told reporters after being asked his feelings about working out for the local team. "I've been traveling around the country late and it just feels good to be home in Philly."
Elegar, who established himself in the mid-major Colonial Athletic Association, got an opportunity to showcase his skills along with a pair of likely first-round draft picks: power forward Darrell Arthur of Kansas and center Alexis Ajinca, a native of France.
"Playing against guys like that shows you where you stand as a player and how much room [there is] to get better," Elegar said.
Elegar participated in a variety of drills including shooting mid-range jumpers and free throws, posting up and defending the post and running the floor and finishing at the rim with Sixers President GM Ed Stefanski and head coach Maurice Cheeks amongst those in attendance.
"[I wanted to show] my ability to shoot the 15-to-18 foot mid-range jumper, my athleticism and my length and my quickness," he said.
The 6-foot-9 forward, who also worked out with NBA franchises in Houston, New Orleans, Portland and Washington D.C. is unsure whether his name will be called on June 26.
"I don't know, it's a wait and see process," Elegar said. "Hopefully I hear good things come Thursday night."
But regardless of whether or not he does get drafted, Elegar believes he will eventually get a contract with a professional team, even if he has to head overseas, due to his experiences playing internationally for the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team at the Pan American Games and the Tournament of Americas. Elegar scored one point and had four rebounds in a 123-59 loss against a USA team that was compiled of players like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd and Dwight Howard, so he certainly has experience against top-caliber talent.
"I played at a high level and I've shown a lot of teams, not only in the NBA and overseas that I could play and perform with a lot of professionals that come into big tournaments like the Pan American Games and the Tournament of Americas," he said.
Elegar had a strong performance in the 2008 NBA Pre-Draft camp in Orlando, Fla. posting 8.7 points per game on 62 percent shooting.
Prior to the pre-draft camp he also had a solid showing at the Portsmouth Invitational averaging 14 points and better than six rebounds a contest.
Elegar left Drexel ranked 15th on the school's all-time scoring and rebounding lists with 1,285 points and 676 rebounds respectively.
