Drexel President Constantine Papadakis announced that Mark Greenberg, dean of the Pennoni Honors College, will take on the role of interim provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs effective July 1.
"He [Papadakis] called me in as soon as the provost [Stephen Director] announced his departure," Greenberg said.
He was offered the position after discussing the details and after Papadakis spoke with the deans, trustees and students leaders, according to Greenberg.
"Interim means that I am not permanently appointed," Greenberg said. "If things work well, I may stay in that job."
According to Greenberg, although dean of the Honors College and interim provost are responsible for different things, there are many similarities, such as understanding the needs of the colleges.
Some of the responsibilities that Greenberg will have as interim provost include a relationship with all of the deans, responsibility for the Registrar's Office, creating reports and overseeing advisors and tutoring.
Greenberg said that initially, there is no need for abrupt changes.
"Every human being has a unique set of characteristics and the style or the way of doing things will change," Greenberg said.
He also said that he has a great deal to learn and that learning the day to day operations is one of his short term goals. As for his long term goal, Greenberg said he hopes to realize the strategic goals at Drexel.
"Director did a great job of leading through the strategic plan," Greenberg said.
One major principle of the plan, according to Greenberg, is realizing the benefits of a comprehensive university.
"This is a major research university now," he said. "It's big and bustling and booming."
He advised students that as the reputation of the University increases, the value of their degree increases as well.
The strategic plan is also enhancing Drexel physically, according to Greenberg.
"Physical spaces often determine how we feel about ourselves and our environment," Greenberg said. "Buildings in renovations create great learning spaces if well designed, and put the image of a great, modern university."
He said the plan will give people a sense of pride in students and the University.
Greenberg said a lot of the students know him by the personal e-mails he sends out.
"What those e-mails do, or what the students tell me that they do, is humanize the dean who used to be a young student," Greenberg said. "It assures students that 'Others got through it, I can too.'"
Greenberg said his greatest accomplishment as dean of the Pennoni Honors College was enriching the lives of thousands of students and developing relationships with students as well.
Greenberg also helped implement the Cultural Passport, which he said enhances the "experimental education at Drexel." Aside from just the co-operative program, this experimental education at Drexel includes civic engagement and involvement in the city.
The interim dean of the Pennoni Honors College has not been announced yet; the Honors College is looking for a "good, tenured, experienced faculty member," according to Greenberg.
