Issue date: 6/6/08 Section: Sports
This past season, in Drexel sports proved to be memorable. Teams had historic turnarounds. Athletes overcame odds and succeeded on the highest of levels. Records were shattered, as were teams' dreams of making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996.
However, through all that, there were a plethora of stories that emerged. So many, that some could not appear on the list below.
But, there's no need to preface any further. Here are the top 10 stories of the Dragons' 2007-2008 year in athletics.
Honorable Mention:
Katie McCann graduates holding eight swimming records.
Steve Mytych breaks wrestling program's single-season record for wins (38).
Omar Laalej goes 21-5 at first singles in his senior year.
10. Frank Elegar attempts to make the NBA
Unfortunately for the men's basketball season, the 2007-2008 campaign wasn't one to remember. The Dragons finished just 12-20 overall, including a paltry 5-13 in the CAA. It wasn't exactly the ending that Frank Elegar would've hoped for, but he did accomplish some noteworthy things along the way. Before the season began, Elegar competed for the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team at the Pan American Games. Starting at center, he got his name into the scoring column, playing against the likes of Jason Kidd, Carmelo Anthony and Lebron James. At the season's end Elegar had a strong Portsmouth Invitational and was invited to participate in the 2008 NBA Pre-Draft camp in Orlando, Fla. Although he might not have gotten the notice he would have wanted, Elegar did average 9.7 points per game on 62 percent shooting. For a player that Bruiser Flint seemingly took a chance on, Elegar has certainly exceeded initial expectations.
9. Field hockey team goes from 8-11 to 12-9
Just a year ago the field hockey team finished 8-11 overall and 2-6 in the conference. But the team underwent a transformation in 2007 finishing 12-9 overall and 5-3 in the CAA. The Dragons played No. 10 Duke down to the wire in Durham, losing 3-1. They also lost twice to No. 8 James Madison by a combined score of 3-0, ultimately falling to the Dukes in the CAA Semifinals. Senior midfielder Sarah Gostomski, who had a career-high four goals and six assists, became just the third player in team history to be named an All-American. And after guiding her team to a turnaround of great proportions, head coach Denise Zelenak was selected to play for the U.S. Indoor Field Hockey Team in the 2008 Pan Am Games.
