New members of the USGA were sworn in June 2. The student government group will work towards porgrams and initiatives that will benefit students. President-elect Kristen Smith encouraged members to "Reach for the stars," at the end of their first meeting.

The Undergraduate Student Association swore in 25 new members June 2 as they wrapped up their 2007-2008 year, having addressed 75 percent of issues they outlined, completing 25 issues and "looking into" 12 issues, according to Jeff Gardosh, past president of USGA.

According to Gardosh, a list had been compiled during the summer of 2007 with 53 issues he wanted to address over the course of the year.

"This past year was great; I could have never imagined all that we were able to achieve over the past year. The bar has been set high for next year's board," Gardosh said.

USGA Advisor and Dean of students David Ruth said the organization was very productive over the past year, and that after he challenged them to reach out to the students, the board was very responsive.

Theo Speedy, a sophomore civil engineering major and College of Engineering representative, said that over the next year, the most important thing USGA is working towards is implementing programs and initiatives that will benefits students.

"Although it has been admitted that the USGA does have problem with visibility, it is also the responsibility of the student to be informed with what we are doing. Trust me, if you visit our web site, or read some of our editorial comments sent into The Triangle, You will know everything that we do," Speedy said.

Of the 25 members being sworn in, 16 were voted into office, three were write-ins and six were appointed by the board.

Representatives for the School of Education, Goodwin College of Professional Studies, Commuter, iSchool, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Nursing and Health Services were appointed.

Senior Associate Vice President for Public Safety Domenic Ceccanecchio attended the meeting at the request of Stacey Rose, USGA Elections Chair.

Ceccanecchio lead the 25 members of USGA for the 2008-2009 academic year in the oath, which the new members recited as a whole.

Members of the new board include: Amy Shah, Andrew Gould, Andrew Moriarity, Anubhuti Singh, Bill Ling, Brian Leung, Daniel Reisler, Ed Dolphin, Jaimie Sanchez, Jason Hollenstein, Jim Andorko, Jim Breen, Kimberly Rybak, Kristen J. Smith, Liz Kelly, Manny Romano, Michael Johnson, Nathan Smith, Nicholas Ruiz, Sarah Lindsay, Sean Murphy, Shams Naim, Theodore T. Speedy, Jr., Tristan Johnson and Tynisha Williams.

President-elect Kristen Smith spoke to the new members after this final meeting was called to a close.

"Reach for the stars," Smith told the new members of USGA. "You are here for a reason."

According to Smith, every member of USGA needs to come to the first meeting of the academic year with a specific goal in mind, whether it is for the year or the term.
