As the temperatures in Philadelphia continue to heat up as summer approaches, so does Drexel's Sean Semenetz after his impressive performance on the golf course.
Semenetz won the qualifying round of the 89th West Chester Golf Association (WGA) Amateur Championship, earning the right to play for the match championship June 10-12.
"It was a good feeling," Semenetz said. "I think only being a qualifier, it isn't as important. I was just happy to get to the next round. Being the leader is just a bonus."
Semenetz finished four-under 67 and was the only golfer to finish under par for the day. Even more impressive, he accumulated six birdies and just two bogeys while winning the qualifier by four shots.
"I wasn't really thinking about winning," he said. "I just wanted to qualify. I was a little surprised, but I knew I was capable of doing it. It was just a matter of executing."
Semenetz earned a second seed for the match play championship, only behind Michael Quagliano, the defending champion. He is one of 32 golfers to qualify for the championship.
Semenetz said earning a No. 2 seed is an accomplishment, but the most important thing is qualifying for the match play championship.
"If I just play my game I'll be fine," Semenetz said. "It doesn't really matter what seed you are in the tournament. You have to play every match like it's your last. I'm working on more of the mental aspect since its match play."
He said it is important to consistently improve his overall game.
"I just want to keep working with my coach at Drexel," Semenetz said. "I just want to keep improving. Each year I continue to improve and as long as I do that, everything else will take care of itself."
