Drexel seniors will be joined by four honorary speakers at the 121st commencement June 14 in one of four ceremonies in the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Lebow College of Business will hold its graduation ceremony at 8:30 a.m. and has invited Carl Icahn, founder of the securities firm Icahn and Co. Inc., to receive an honorary degree.
Icahn began his career on Wall Street in the 1960s and founded the company that carries his name in 1968. About 10 years later, Icahn began a career of stepping into leadership roles and many large corporations such as Nabisco, Viacom, Time Warner and Motorola. He has been described as a "corporate raider" for his hostile takeover of TWA in 1985.
A Drexel press release stated that Icahn has many charitable interests focusing primarily on child welfare, specifically education and medicine.
According to Forbes 2008 listing, Icahn is the 46th richest person in the world with a net worth of $14 billion. He is a graduate of Princeton University.
Icahn has also been in recent news because of comments he made about presidential candidate Barack Obama at an investors conference. Bloomberg financial news reported that Icahn told investors May 21 Obama would make a "terrible president" because he would go on a spending spree that the country cannot afford.
At noon, the College of Nursing and Health Professions, School of Public Health and Goodwin College of Professional Studies will confer an honorary degree to Rear Admiral Steven Galson, who has been the acting U.S. surgeon general since 2007.
As surgeon general, Galson "communicates the best science, evidence, and data to the American people in order for them to make healthy choices that impact their health, safety, and security," according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Prior to being named Surgeon General, Galson was the director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the Food and Drug Administration. Here, Galson oversaw pharmaceutical regulation.
