Drexel University Provost Stephen Director resigned May 27 to take the position of Northeastern University provost, according to Northeastern and Drexel officials.
Director's resignation will take effect June 30, allowing enough time for an interim Provost to be selected, according to University spokesman Philip Terranova.
"[University President Constantine] Dr. Papadakis accepted the resignation today and informed the board immediately," Terranova wrote in an e-mail.
"This position [at Northeastern] affords me the opportunity to focus my attention on core academic values and I feel that it meshes well with my own strengths and interests," Director wrote in an e-mail sent to faculty and staff the evening of May 27.
Director cited that some of his accomplishments at Drexel included the creation of a law school, development of an academic strategic plan, expansion of the staff at the Steinbright Career Development Center and increased investment in classroom facilities.
"He [Director] is an energetic, forward-thinking and collaborative leader - a passionate advocate for excellence in and across disciplines," Northeastern President Joseph Aoun said in a statement.
Faculty, administrators, undergraduate and graduate students were among members of the committee that selected Director at Northeastern, according to a press release.
"The input we received from faculty, students and staff was invaluable in helping to inform our deliberations," Donna Bishop, Northeastern professor and committee chair, said in a statement.
A series of forums was held at Northeastern to gather suggestions from students, faculty and staff about the Provost's selection, according to a press release.
Director has been Provost for three years at Drexel and is a former dean of engineering at the University of Michigan and Carnegie Mellon University.
